When people think of Yellowstone National Park, mention of Old Faithful is pretty well a given. This enormous geyser is unique in the world as it is in one of the most geyser-populated areas on the planet. Each year millions of people go to witness its eruption, spewing millions of litres of superheated water high into the air.
The name was given to the geyser after its discovery by an expedition into the area, back in the late nineteenth century. It erupts on average about one hundred and thirty seven thousand times a year, which is on the increase due to increased seismic activity. In fact, it sends up to thirty two kilolitres of superheated water from beneath the ground and into the air above. On average, the water height can reach about one hundred and eighty four feet, erupted sometimes as frequently as every hour, lasting about two to ninety minutes.
To date, Old Faithful is definitely not the park's largest or tallest, but its frequency of eruptions has been astounding people for almost a century. In fact, between the 1980's and 1990's scientists have discovered that the temperatures in the water beneath the geyser is increasing. In recent years, scientists have become acutely aware that seismic and volcanic activity in the area is also increasing, suggesting that the movement of magma (molten lava) beneath the earth's surface is on the move, which has also been confirmed by further activity some distance away at Mammoth Hot Springs. Scientists do know that the majority of Yellowstone is in fact the dormant remains of a super volcano, which was the focus of a movie done by the BBC. Though many people are not aware, Old Faithful's activities may just be a precursor of what may be to come, even a potential hazard that could one day result in the eruption of the volcano itself.
