Mammoth Hot Springs
One of the most intriguing places in Yellowstone is the Mammoth Hot Springs Area. Hot water, warmed by the remnant magma of a cataclysmic volcanic explosion over 600,000 years ago, flows out of the earth in the more than 50 hot springs in the area. Over time, the limestone deposited as the boiling hot water meets the cold air has built up to form terraces that rise from the valley floor. In winter, Mammoth Hot Springs is filled with steam, causing the air to feel eerily warm.
