Thermal features have long since been of great fascination to people across the globe and nowhere else has got a reputation for such large numbers of these features than the Yellowstone region of the United States. Three quarters of the globe's geysers are found there. Features include fumaroles, geysers, mud pots and hot springs. The biggest geyser is the Steamboat.

The park offers a treasure of interesting thermal activities and features that draw in travelers from across the globe. In fact, the geysers are signs of the history of the park and area which is volcanic. Major super eruptions occurred in the park millions of years ago and occur basically every six hundred thousand years.

Yellowstone's volcanic activity is no doubt because of its location on the continental divide where two continental plates meet. Water that flows underground is superheated by the flowing lava below and has produced amazing geysers including the West Thumb, Old Faithful, Midway, Lower and Norris. In fact, the volcanic area is connected to Mammoth Hot Springs.

Old Faithful is the most famous of the geysers and erupts about every hour, lasting for up to one hundred and twenty minutes. Seismic activity in the form of earthquakes has increased the activity which now happens every seventy eight minutes.

Though the geysers are in themselves tourist attractions, they are still very dangerous and should not be approached as temperatures have been measured as high as 265 degrees Farenheit, hot enough to cook skin.  It is safest to take a tour of follow the directed routes and not to attempt to approach the geysers or other thermal features.

Yellowstone is by far one of the most fascinating places on Earth, but it is a testiment to the constant changes the planet is undergoing.  So tourists are reminded to take photos as the changes may one day alter the very landscape of the area.
