There are many things that one should attempt during one's life and experiencing skiing and staying in a yurt are just two of them. Yellowstone offers the environment, backcountry, scenery and challenges that many people demand when going on holiday there and the thought of taking some trips into the wilderness and staying in a modern day version of an ancient tent (yurt) is irresistible for most.

Yurts are round tents that can sleep up to ten people at a time. Each yurt is equipped with all the necessary things, including a wood stove, propane stove, beds and in many cases, full meals. The best way to experience this is to take a tour or one of many trips the park offers. These can go from two days to a week or more. It is a unique experience and can even be combined with skiing.

Basically the yurt was the tent of the Mongolian nomads who wandered across the steppes of centralized Asia, going from highlands to lowlands during winters and summers. The word itself is believed to have been from Turkey, translated to mean place to dwell as in an immediate homeland. Because of its portability, the yurt has been adopted by many nations as its wooden frame and felt coverings provide some of the best protection from the snow, ice, wind and rain. Best of all it can be easily taken apart and all the pieces carried by horses, yaks or camels from site to site. However, in the US, the North American version is made of specially engineered materials and constructions to withstand some of the harshest conditions around. Generally, the ones in North American take days to put up and even more to take down. Usually they are not moved very often and are usually more of a permanent encampment. North American construction of the yurt was developed in the 60's. Interestingly enough varied groups and people use these yurts for housing and even school rooms.
