Snowcat Skiing

Snowcat skiing is one of the ultimate pleasures in Yellowstone. Skiers can join varied sized groups and a guide into the backcountry for a day or more to ski where beauty and danger combine. Many expert skiers are tempted to do snowcatting, not only challenging their skiing abilities, but giving them that rush of excitement from skiing along the edge of danger and coming out completely intact.

Snowcat skiing is not for everyone, but it is a challenge that experts cannot resist. Backcountry ski adventures begin in Yellowstone, probably the best US location for snowcat skiing. Skiers can indulge in danger, history and push their limits to the edge and go away feeling the greatest sense of achievement.

Most snowcat tours accommodate about ten people and may even go as far as twenty thousand feet of vertical drops within a single day. In fact, it provides a way to get out of the crowded areas and resorts and find peace in the icy smoke of new fallen powder snow.

The adventures begin with incredible views of Yellowstone's mountain ranges, lush forests, steep ravines and deep powdery snow. Many venture towards Angle Mountain where expert guides help skiers navigate through rough terrain, some of which is fit for even the intermediate level skier.

There are some seven hundred skiing areas and as much as three hundred inches of snow annually. Most of the areas are not far from Jackson. Typically a snowcatting day would include roundtrip transport from a resort of choice or Jackson Hole, a briefing about local safety, protocols for backcountry skiing, instructions on how to use a transceiver, lunch/snacks/warm drinks/desserts and a water bottle. Skiers would also get guides, a heated and enclosed snowcat, up to ten runs of skiing, additional hiking if preferred and end of the day drinks at a local watering hole.

All guides are trained in search and rescue, as well as advanced emergency first aid and how to deal with avalanche situations. They are highly trained in backcountry survival, skiing, snowboarding, camping and mountaineering. They also are specially trained in telemark skiing.

A day of snowcatting is by far the best adventure imaginable. Many come from across the planet to experience Yellowstone in the winter, but to add to it the snowcat adventure is perfect when planning any holiday.
