Bozeman in Montana is the nearby home of the famous Bridger Bowl Resort, where its reputation of 50 years proceeds itself with one of the most affordable and attractive non-profit skiing areas around. Tourists enjoy over 2000 acres of trails, runs and other skiing acres, providing the perfect place for training and advancement in cross-country, telemark and downhill skiing. With so many people enjoying the resort each year, it is no surprise that it has become one of Montana's top skiing destinations.
The diversity of the skiing experiences in Bridger Bowl can be seen by its rating system for areas, lifts, runs and trails. They include beginner (22%), intermediate (30%), advanced (26%) and extreme (22%). For the expert skiers the opportunities include the world famous Ridge and the recently built Slushman's Chairlift. However, extreme skiers are advised that avalanche transceivers, a partner, a shovel and a knowledge of the local backcountry terrain are mandatory.
Bridger Bowl first opened in the middle of the 1940's. As interest grew, Montana State bought the land in 1949 with only 120 acres, considering at the time a skiing area and state park. By 1951 a rope-tow was put in, but as it was then called, the Bridger Mountain State Park, had little success. However, top skiers rallied together and formed the Bozeman State Park and Recreation Association (1954), opening a new lift in 1955. After being given non-profit status the rest as they say is history and what can be seen today is a result of volunteers.
Bridger Bowl Resort is perfectly located to the east of the Bridger Mountain Range, just sixteen miles outside of Bozeman. Snow accumulations can be beyond human comprehension, with the record set in December 2004 with six feet of dry powdery snow, all having fallen within twenty four hours.
Rentals are available for all sorts of skiing gear. The Bridger Bowl Rental Shop has telemark, alpine and regular grade skis, as well as some of the best boots and poles in the area. It also carries sunglasses, mittens, hats, goggles, souvenirs, posters, caps, sweatshirts and t-shirts.
The best part about Bridger Bowl is that its non-profit status has kept prices down considerably, including lift prices at all levels. Even kids, age 5 and under ski free!
Another great feature of the Bridger Bowl Resort is the free skiers' busses. They are fairly new and offer two services throughout the skiing season between Bozeman and Bridger Bowl.
