Silvergate, Montana neighbors Cooke City as the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Silvergate is a fantastic place to stay and explore in winter months because it feels so secluded. Roads heading east from Silvergate and Cooke City are closed through the winter. Therefore, in order to access other parts of Montana from Silvergate, you must drive 52 miles back through Yellowstone National Park and exit the north entrance into Gardiner. Silvergate sits four miles closer than Cooke City to the northeast entrance of the park.

Although a much smaller town than Cooke City, Silvergate is home to a handful of Old West accommodations like cabins and ranches, eateries, equipment and gear rentals, as well as information on winter adventures. This alpine town was founded in 1932 as the northeast entrance to Yellowstone. These days, only a couple hundred people call Silvergate home year round.
The primary mode of transportation in Silvergate on the snow is on snowmobile or ski. Winter months in Silvergate lure snow enthusiasts to enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the surrounding Beartooth Mountains. From its elevation of 7,400 feet you can quickly gain access to and explore the area’s backcountry trails and open areas for breathtaking views, frozen streams and wildlife sightings.
