Accessed from the Interstate 90 corridor communities of Billings and Columbus, MT, Red Lodge is located along the route to the Northeastern gateway entrance to Yellowstone via the towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate. Known for its proximity to the spectacular Beartooth Highway, this thoroughfare climbs through rugged and beautiful alpine scenery to an elevation of 10,947 feet. Typified by views of glacial lakes, clear streams and wildflower meadows, Charles Kuralt - noted CBS journalist - once called this drive 'The most spectacular highway in America'. Closed during winter months, the Beartooth typically opens for the summer in late May or June, but can be temporarily closed by snow even in summer months, typically closing again for the winter season sometime in late October or early November.
