The Greater Yellowstone Region is one of the premier wildlife viewing areas in the world. With only a few species hibernating, most of the large mammal population endures the winter by staying active or migrating to winter ranges. Winter visitors can expect to see moose, buffalo, bald eagles, elk, and mule deer braving the winter climate and deep snowpack. Wildlife is abundant throughout the 14 million acres of the Yellowstone ecosystem. Photographers flock to the area in the winter to capture dramatic images of local animals enduring the harsh winter months. Many local companies offer guided wildlife tours.
